21 Jun FRY BREEDING: Nursery and tank for management and growth of fishes
When we think to breeding and reproducing fish in the aquarium, we must first know the needs of fishes and future fry, which will have to grow in a healthy and protected. The first choice we have to do is to have a space dedicated to the reproduction / development of the eggs / birth / care of the fry (internal or external nurseries) or let live little fishes inside the tank, obviously creating favorable conditions such as protected safe areas for the laying of eggs, holes or thick vegetation for the growth and the hiding of any fry. The types of nurseries and childbirth that exist on the market are of various kinds, but the following are the most common:
Floating Nursery with plastic separator: It basically serves for viviparous fish as it allows separation of the fry, incubated inside the mother’s womb and then born alive at birth, in order to avoid becoming immediately prey to the latter. The mother will be placed in the upper part shortly before parturition and the little fishes just come out, will fall by gravity and pass through a separator, then you can remove the mother and the separator, then grow them inside for the first period of life. This kind of nursery is very convenient and practical, but it has the defect, not has much oxygenation as it is plastic and has not many holes.
Floating or hooks Nursery with plastic armor and nylon net: It is mainly used for already-developed fry, or for ovary fish such as Cyclides that after egg-insemination, management, hatching and first caregiving (generally carried out by father or mother with the aid of the mouth) should be picked up and placed inside, to avoid being eaten by other adults in the tank. This kind of nursery is very practical and has the advantage of having a good oxygenation becaouse the nylon net allows the passage of water. Just like any other nursery to be inserted into the aquarium, you do not need to create a new environment and manage another aquarium.
External Nursery dedicated to the coupling and growth of the fry: When your intent is no longer just about pairing a couple, but breeding or selecting new specimens, you will need to install a dedicated outdoor nursery only for reproduction, care and growth of the little new fishes. It must be equipped with an external or internal filter, oxygenator, illumination, thermometer and heater. The presence of a substrate is not essential as it will help us in cleaning it. In this new tank you will have to create the best conditions for the coupling and the life of the fry, controlling the values of water PH, GH, KH and temperature. Defects? No one except the time dedicated to manage another aquarum.
